Money Lesson Plan

Topic: Money- Making change

Grade 4, Learning Support

Subject: Math

Materials: computer, projector, play money, toy cash register ( if available), calculator, objects with prices

Objective: The students will make change.

Procedures: 1.) Gain attention by telling the students they will be playing store and will play with money. 2.) State the objective. 3.) Using a website from nettrekker, display an activity on making change using the projector. http://www.mathplayground.com/making_change.html The activity gives a scenario that you have a summer job at a local store and will have to make change. The activity gives several dollar amounts of the item price and the amount paid. I would have each student use a calculator to come up with the change. When everyone has the correct answer, I will type in the change. Then we have to drag down dollar bills and coins to show the change on the counter. I would let each student come up and drag the money to show the change. 4.) After they feel comfortable with this, I would let them play store. 5.) Have the students take turns being the cashier. I use a toy cash register to make it as real as possible. The other students in the class will pick out the items marked with a price and use play money to pay. The cashier can use a calculator to figure out the change and then they have to give the other students their change. 6.) Students could do the activity from nettrekker during centers or freetime to reinforce making change.

Assessment: Teacher observation of students being the cashier and making the correct change.
